Looks very nice. I recognise the design, is it Luke's sabre?

Have you tried creating the glow right in Max? If you use the mental ray renderer, try this...

Load the render setup window, go to the Renderer tab... then scroll down to Camera Shaders.
Click the box next to Output and select "Glare". (drag the box to an empty material sphere in the browser to edit how much glare you get)

Then set up your object with any material... as long as it's self-illuminated.
I just used a standard mat with a high self-illumination and a raytrace reflection to do this.

That's pretty much it...

Maybe you'll freak out your teacher... and it's not texturing or painting! ;)

I'm not sure if you got my msg or not.. but it should show up once you choose Mentalray as your scene renderer... in Max9, it's called Camera Effects instead of shaders... but I think Glare is only available in 2008 and 2009.
